Two epic finals to close a memorable event. That was the story of the fourth and final day of the 2017 Pan, which ended this Sunday in Irvine, Calif.
After the champions were defined for every weight class, it was time to crown the two absolute victors.
In the men’s final it was the favorite, Leandro Lo, who came out on top. Having won the heavyweight title over Tanner Rice by 4-2, he faced João Gabriel.
The fight was a tough one. João, who is even heavier than a Lo who enjoys moving up in weight class, had won the ultra-heavyweight tourney earlier with a bow-and-arrow choke on Gustavo Dias. João and Lo moved a lot, but, with a quick transition followed by a foot attack, Lo dashed João’s dream.
The women’s tournament came down to Tayane Porfírio and Jéssica Flowers. Earlier, Porfírio had closed out the super-heavyweight division with Gabi Garcia. Meanwhile, heavyweight Flowers had seized the title from the hands of the favorite in that division, Andresa Correa. The open’s final was decided on points, after Porfírio took Flowers down and maintained the top position on the ground.
