If you live in the San Diego area and are looking to receive some top-quality jiu-jitsu by one of the best competitors out there, well, you have quite a few options. But adding himself to the mix is none other than Keenan Cornelius, who has announced that his new academy, Legion American Jiu-Jitsu, will be opening in “about 30 days.”
“@legion_ajj is almost here (give that page a follow for the coming updates) I’m so excited I can barely contain it. I’ve always been a bit of a divergent thinker when it comes to jiujitsu, in terms of technique and the philosophy of this art and sport. It’s rubbed people the wrong way in the past. I think because most of what I do isn’t traditional and sometimes the ideas I have are so big it’s difficult for people around me to see the full image that I’m striving for, without me specifically explaining all the steps I’m taking. But this gym, it’s a lot more than just a place to teach and train jiu-jitsu. I have big plans and the infrastructure to support them has been in the works for years. But having my own place to really build a culture and environment I wholeheartedly believe in, is something I’ve strived for since my purple belt days. I want to thank the people who have been integral to this process, my team of @legion_ajj generals: @mihajj is the mastermind and my chief advisor, he’s the reason we were Finicially successful enough to make this dream a reality and to do it all ourselves without outside investors, with his work ethic, dedication to perfection and his never ending thirst for knowledge I would trust him with anything and know he can achieve it, @cristianodlg who has been a gift from the Jiujitsu gods, his knowledge of martial arts, the organized understanding of effective and ethical marketing, and seemingly never ending well of creativity has been one of the most valuable load bearing individuals on the team. He inspires us all to achieve the same level of excellence and hard work he so fluidly incorporates @josephdiazfilms the artist, the miestro, his talents are yet to be truly shown but, just wait. @sunshine_bjj who has been here since the beginning. Tirelessly does the work no one else wants to do, provides detailed purple belt insight during dark times, brightening the team with his voluminous red hair. And to the new members who are tightening this whole operation and are the oil to the cogs and gears of the well maintained machine we have formed. In about 30 days the next chapter of my life begins and I can’t wait.”
Cornelius has been steadily going his own way after leaving Atos back in April. In June, he then announced that he’d be starting his own academy, and since then, the jiu-jitsu world has had their eyes and ears at the ready for more news of Cornelius’ next chapter in his jiu-jitsu journey.
Cornelius has always had a unique approach to jiu-jitsu (both in technique and philosophy), and his large following of fans will likely provide him with a strong opening and membership numbers for his new gym. If you’d like to keep up with Legion’s progress, you can follow the academy’s account on Instagram.
