This weekend, Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa will put his Fight 2 Win masters middleweight title on the line at F2W 170, and he’ll have his work cut out for him against Josh Hinger.
The promotion announced the matchup last week, adding that Max Gimenis would go up against Guilherme Augusto in another big match on the evening of April 17.
Formiga is a multiple-time World Master champion with a win at Brazilian Nationals from 2002. His last appearance at F2W truly ended with a bang — he defended his title against Johnny Souza at F2W 163 in February by slamming his opponent to the mat, briefly rendering him unconscious and prompting the referee to end the match then and there.
Hinger, who took home bronze at ADCC in 2019, is certainly a worthy challenger for the title. His numerous titles include big wins at No-Gi Worlds and No-Gi American Nationals. We haven’t seen him in action since 2019, but his most recent competitive appearance was, in fact, at F2W 131, where he picked up his second win for the promotion in a referee decision against Murilo Santana.
The match between Gimenis and Augusto will mark the third time these two have faced off as black belts. The first time around, Augusto got the better of Gimenis in the semifinals of the Sao Paulo Open in 2016. More recently, in the semifinals of Pans in 2019, Gimenis took home the win against Augusto to make them 1-1 against each other at the black belt level. Gimenis’ most recent F2W appearance saw him defeat Tex Johnson at F2W 163, while Augusto’s one and only promotional bout saw him drop a decision against Devhonte Johnson — a loss he later avenged when the two faced off in the Dallas Open.
As always, we’ll see plenty of action on the undercard as well. Being that last week’s F2W 169 ended with one of the biggest comebacks we’ve seen in recent memory in jiu-jitsu, we’re excited to see what this weekend’s event will hold.
