John Danaher Thinks Roger Gracie Is The Best Jiu-Jitsu Athlete Of All Time

Famous jiu-jitsu coach John Danaher has named the person he believes is the greatest jiu-jitsu athlete of all time… and no, it’s not Gordon Ryan.

On an episode of Lex Fridman’s podcast, Danaher was asked who he believes is the greatest jiu-jitsu athlete of all time. Danaher answered the question based on what he believes are the four “faces” of jiu-jitsu: gi, no-gi, MMA, and self-defense. And according to him, the competitor who’s the best overall BJJ competitor is Roger Gracie.

Danaher, of course, isn’t alone in this belief. Gracie is widely regarded as the “GOAT” of jiu-jitsu, with ten IBJJF World Championship titles to his name as a black belt and a ridiculously high submission rate. Gracie also became the first BJJ athlete to submit all eight of his opponents on the way to victory in both his division and the absolute category at ADCC in 2005. Gracie also enjoyed a successful MMA career with a record of 8-2, with six of his wins coming by way of submission.
