After over eight years of training, the man who created the Jiu-Jitsu Times has earned his black belt.
Kitt Canaria, who has spent most of his jiu-jitsu career at Gracie Barra Northridge in California, was promoted earlier today by Romulo Barral. About four years ago, 28-year-old Canaria also took his love for jiu-jitsu off the mats and onto the internet when he created the Jiu-Jitsu Times, which has amassed over half a million followers across multiple social media platforms.
Canaria expressed his gratitude and reflected on his journey to black belt earlier today:

“I’m very blessed to be training here at @gbnorthridge . When I first started here, my goal was to be a world champion, so I dropped out school and quit my job to try to accomplish my dream. It was a struggle paying the bills and figuring out how to eat the next day. GB Northridge gave me a job so I could pay some of my bills and train, with @yamtolentino supporting me every single day, I was a blue belt when I won No-Gi Pans and No-Gi Worlds, and when I became a purple belt, that’s when my baby boy Kyrie came out. I had to switch gears. All the struggles, the pain, the sacrifice from the mats — I used those experiences outside so that I could provide for my family. I asked again for more work from GB Northridge so I could pay for more of the stuff I needed to pay for, and they supported me. That’s the best thing about jiu-jitsu is you already experience survival mode on the mat, so you know how it feels when you’re off the mat. I want to thank everybody who supported and Thank you so much @romulobarral @janainabarral @jaesonb for trusting in me.”
Congratulations, Kitt!
