Jiu-Jitsu Coach Jose Campuzano Hospitalized After Being Attacked By Group Outside Texas Bar

BJJ and MMA coach Jose Campuzano is in “critical, but stable” condition after being attacked by a group of people outside the George Dieter bar in El Paso, Texas, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Campuzano, who is listed as a coach on the Bushido MMA and BJJ academy website and earned his BJJ black belt late last year, was reportedly assaulted in the parking lot after leaving the establishment, according to KTSM 9 News. His cousin Gabriela Campuzano told the news outlet that Jose had seen a group attacking two other victims and stepped in to help. “That’s who Jose is, and unfortunately, he got attacked and bombarded by this group of people,” she said.

Campuzano was reportedly not breathing following the assault, which was partially captured on video. Be advised that some viewers may consider the footage graphic and disturbing:

Campuzano was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Gabriela told KTSM 9 that Jose has woken up and recognized her uncle, which is a promising sign, though he isn’t out of danger yet.

Police are still looking for the other people involved in the attack, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward. Further details of the ongoing investigation have not been made public.

The Campuzano family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover Jose’s medical costs and ” anything else they may need during this difficult time.” You can donate to the fund here.
