Jake Shields has had quite an exciting combat sports career. The 38-year-old vegetarian is a former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion (not welterweight, as I mistakenly said in the interview), a former challenger for the UFC Welterweight Championship Georges St-Pierre once held, and a member of MMA’s notorious Skrap Pack, which boasts such names as fellow Cesar Gracie alumni Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, and Gilbert Melendez.
Lately, Shields has been turning his attention towards grappling, training at Renzo Gracie’s academy in New York. He is set take on Dan Strauss at the upcoming Polaris 5 event, which will be going down live on UFC Fight Pass on August 19.
I caught up with Jake via telephone yesterday to talk about Polaris, his animal-free diet, and his past, present, and future in both MMA and grappling.
