Iowa Police Officers Now Training Defensive Tactics With Local Wrestling Team

Judging by the moves they’ve been using in the streets, it looks like Iowa City Police practice defensive tactics with Hawkeyes wrestling team.

Police Chief Jody Matherly: For us to be able to do that more effective with less energy and do it safely means everything.

A video release came out earlier this week that stated the training is supposed to teach officers new skills to safely control suspects when they’re forced down on the ground. If a peace officer’s efforts at resolving a conflict go unanswered, then they need the skills to take control of a hand-to-hand situation.

Iowa City officers will also continue to practice standard police techniques with their usual trainers. The Oelwein Police Department expressed interest in training with the University of Iowa wrestling team as well.
