The suicide of celebrity chef, television host, “ambassador for the world,” and BJJ practitioner Anthony Bourdain has greatly affected everyone who knew him or followed his work. The jiu-jitsu community has been particularly crushed by the loss of one of our own, with numerous “everyday” and high-profile athletes alike paying tribute to the Parts Unknown host on social media.
Bourdain’s death has also reignited a global conversation about mental illness and suicide, and the creator of the popular Immortal Choke comics has come up with a way to help pay tribute to the late blue belt while helping the scientific community learn more about the mental illness. The artist has released a t-shirt featuring his rendition of Bourdain on the back, with a quote by the chef on the front. 100 percent of the profits from the sales of the shirt will benefit the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, which provides grants to scientists researching ways to help people living with mental illness.
The shirts sell for $35, and Immortal Choke is also offering canvas prints for $30 and posters for $24. All of these items will only be on sale until June 23, so act quickly if you want one for yourself or someone you know.
