The grappling world continues its struggle against the Coronavirus pandemic as the IBJJF moved to postpone the 2020 Worlds indefinitely. The organization announced their decision via social media, and elaborated that the entire ranking system would be reevaluated in the face of the crisis.
“Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be able to hold the World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship during the scheduled dates. We continue to monitor the developing situation, and will be rescheduling the tournament for a later date once it has been determined that is safe to return to normal activities. The ranking season and point requirements for the Adult Black Belt division will be re-evaluated and adjusted accordingly once we are able to open registration for the rescheduled date. We will be posting further information to the event page as soon as we have any updates,” The post read.
As events and even gyms around the world are canceled and closed with no firm end in sight, the writing was on the wall for worlds as well. The IBJJF acted quickly to cancel this year’s Pans originally set for March 18 earlier this month. A full list of major BJJ events canceled or with closed registration compiled by JJT Managing Editor Averi Clements can be found here.
This continues to be a trying time for all us pajama wrestlers and no-gi bandits, but there’s an end to this. Just keep on washing you hands and checking out the various free BJJ material being released by generous coaches around the world.
We will live to porrada again, gang.
