Horlando showing off his four gold medals.
After hosting the 2018 Worlds, Long Beach’s Walter Pyramid has already moved on to hosting another big event on the BJJ circuit. The American National, held on the 28th, 29th and 30th of June, welcomed gi and no-gi competitors from all parts of the U.S. willing to fight for gold and for valuable points for the season’s IBJJF rankings.
The big name ended up being Horlando Monteiro, of GD Jiu-Jitsu. He fought and won everything available, eventually walking away with gold medals in the classical and no-gi versions of the heavyweight and absolute divisions.
In the gi, Horlando beat Rafael Lima (Atos) at heavyweight and James Puopolo (Ribeiro JJ) in the absolute. Out of the gi, first he became heavyweight champion by defeating Nisar Loynab (Atos); then he dealt Manuel Ribamar (Unity) an armbar from the triangle in the absolute final.
In the women’s gi section, Checkmat’s Andressa Cintra had a great showing. After finishing second at medium heavy — being stopped by black-belt rookie Brenda Heller (Gracie Humaitá), — Andressa picked herself up and reached the absolute final, at which point she closed it out with teammate and featherweight champion Karen Borges.
Read on for the official results.
