Horlando Monteiro and Cláudia do Val win double gold at the Salvador Open

Horlando Monteiro with his two gold medals in Salvador.

The final open tournament in Brazil before the IBJJF Worlds, the Salvador Open, is a guaranteed packed arena every year. Held at the Cajazeiras gymnasium on May 18 and 19, this year the event had two well-known fighters topping the podium twice each.

Horlando Monteiro and Cláudia do Val had won double gold by the end and, joined by the other gold medalists, accumulated precious points in the final stretch of the season’s IBJJF rankings race.

To Horlando, glory came after he achieved one submission in each of his five matches. First he secured gold at heavyweight, besting Johnatan Correia (Luis Paulo JJ) in the final. Later he defeated Carlos Passos (Nova União) for the absolute title.

Cláudia do Val went unopposed in the medium heavy division, but had to beat Líbia Gonçalves (Natural Kombat) to make sure she could claim yet another double-gold weekend.
