You might be aware of some of the many benefits of attending martial arts classes, but did you know it can be a fun bonding activity for the entire family. That’s right, there a lot more to martial arts classes than learning techniques and performing drills. It’s also a great way to meet a bunch of new people and bond closely with your family.

Every martial arts family has its unique story. Some people are born into them while others bring their families along for the ride.

In the case of the Vuu family, it was 9-year-old Chloe who roped her father, William, followed by her brother, in. Chloe took a liking to martial arts while the family lived in Australia. When the family relocated to Singapore, William decided to sign her up for martial arts classes.

“Chloe has done martial arts from a young age,” William explains. “We signed her up for a karate class in Australia, and then about three years ago we moved to Singapore. We wanted her to continue with some form of martial arts. I stumbled upon Evolve MMA online and signed her up. She hasn’t looked back since.”

“What we really loved about Evolve MMA was the fact they had world champions teaching the adults and kids,” William says. “During the trial class, we saw that the world champion instructors were being very patient with the kids.”

Martial arts classes teach your children many core values like discipline, perseverance, respect, teamwork, and critical thinking skills just to name a few. Your children will also gain lots of physical benefits like being in shape, getting stronger, and increased flexibility.

Chloe fit right in at Evolve MMA, quickly absorbing the instruction she was being given. Her coaches and parents were equally impressed with her rapid growth.

“Chloe’s development in BJJ was very fast, and she assimilates the techniques quite fast,” Mundials World Championship Silver Medalist Almiro Barros, an instructor at Evolve MMA, explains. “Also, for her size, she is quite strong. So after a while, I moved her to the kid’s program and, then again, she was responding very well. Not only with the techniques but also by helping others to develop better technique and helping the team to grow.

After seeing Chloe’s improvements as a martial artist, William decided to give martial arts a try as well.

“I was sitting on the sidelines for about two years watching Chloe, taking her to class,” William says. “And since I was spending most of my weekend there, I thought ‘why not join myself?’ I joined at the start of 2017 and I also haven’t looked back either. I really enjoy it.”

William’s training quickly started paying dividends, and it has even helped him to perform better at work.

“Martial arts has really helped me to focus,” William added. “When you slow everything down, you can strategize on your next movement. That has really helped me in my personal career at work. It allows me to put things in perspective and de-stress a lot.”

William isn’t the only member of the Vuu family who has gained improved focus thanks to martial arts classes. Chloe is also able to better focus on tasks in the gym and in school. She enjoys the social interactions she is exposed to during classes.

“BJJ helps me to be more social and more focused on my work,” Chloe explains. “When I get something wrong, I always try again.”

Chloe’s mother, Malinda Vuu, has also noticed her improved focus.

“Chloe wasn’t as focused before doing martial arts,” Malinda says. “She used to have a very short attention span. Once she started doing martial arts her attention became more focused on doing one task, then doing another task.”

The youngest member of the Vuu family, 4-year-old Mason, has also started training at Evolve MMA. Mason has a natural inclination towards BJJ and Muay Thai, but his favorite part of training is having fun with all the other kids.

“I like BJJ because I have many friends,” Mason replied when asked about his favorite thing about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. “And it makes me stronger.”

It not that surprising one of Mason’s favorite things about training is making new friends. A good martial arts gym creates a positive environment that makes it easy for kids and adults alike to bond with their peers. You already have something in common with your training partners; your passion for martial arts. In time, genuine friendships will be developed.

Your passion for martial arts can also bring you and your family together as you all grow individually as martial artists. The sense of accomplishment your kids get from reaching their goals will do wonders for their self-esteem and discipline — which will, in turn, help them to perform better in school.

Your progression as a martial artist will certainly help you in your professional life as well. Who couldn’t use traits like patience, perseverance, respect, and discipline at work?

“It’s a really great thing as a parent to provide your children with the opportunities for them to go out and fend for themselves, but also to set some goals and make themselves proud of their own achievements,” William added.

It’s never too late to become a martial artist and take your family along on the journey. Bring your entire family down for a complimentary trial class to start the journey today!
