During an episode of UFC Tonight, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre told the world he wants to get back in the octagon, but says it is all up to the UFC.
“I want to come back. They know the terms that I want, and trust me, I’m very reasonable. So it’s up to them. We tried. My agent tried to reach them and they’re hard to reach, but I guess they’re going to come back soon. Hopefully, we’ll see.”
St-Pierre also cited problems with the UFC’s partnership with Reebok. According to the former welterweight kingpin, the new deal would not allow him to advertise his sponsors. If he goes back to the UFC on his old contract terms, this will cause him to lose money.
Still, that doesn’t seem to be hampering GSP’s determination to get back in the cage, despite UFC President Dana White opining that the former champ no longer has the drive to compete at a championship level.
“But I’m going to tell him something, to Dana, let me fight once and you’ll see in the first minute of the fight that what you just said is wrong.”
In fact, St-Pierre suggested that the UFC let him fight none other than the current welterweight champ. That way, he can prove he still has what it takes to fight the highest-level contenders.
“Let me fight Tyrone Woodley, then we’ll see if I want to be world champion again.”
Georges St-Pierre has not been in the cage since his controversial win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 back in 2013. Some fans may therefore wonder, like the UFC President, if the French-Canadian powerhouse has what it takes to compete against champions in the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion.
But to these fans, I would not only point to St-Pierre’s determination, but to the fact that he has never stopped training.
GSP seems ready, and it may be only a matter of time before a man who is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest mixed martial artists once again reigns atop the welterweight mountain.
