Grappling Match Between Shinya Aoki & Tomoshige Sera Still Scheduled To Take Place On April 17

Most combat sports events have been canceled or indefinitely postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it looks like at least one martial arts event will still be moving forward despite the various worldwide restrictions implemented to reduce the spread of the virus.

As of Wednesday, Road to ONE’s planned grappling match between Shinya Aoki and Tomoshige Sera is still moving ahead for April 17. The match will be the headliner of an event that will also feature other fights featuring various types of martial arts. While some have expressed doubts that the event would move forward, Sera himself confirmed that it was still happening as planned in a social media post yesterday:

Aoki is a highly accomplished MMA fighter and submission artist, winning lightweight championships for ONE, Shooto, and Dream. Sera will have his work cut out for him, but as a BJJ black belt and Quintet veteran himself, he’ll be looking to make his mark by defeating a martial arts legend like Aoki.

The event is set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, and will be streamed through the ABEMA service at 7pm local time.
