The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tour made its stop in Los Angeles this Sunday, Oct. 18.
Hundreds of athletes gathered at the Azusa Pacific University for a whole day of great technique and thrilling matches.
Roberto Cyborg came back from a 10-0 defeat in the +94kg division final against Ricardo Evangelista to a four-win campaign for the gold medal.
He first beat Alec Baulding 6-0, then he caught Erberth Santos with a choke from the back.
In the semifinal, a last-minute sweep over the same Evangelista ,meant the spot in the final.
The gold medal match was against Andre Campos and Cyborg put hs game to work until he caught Campos’ neck.
In the female brown/black belt division, Tammy Griego needed two matches to win the open class.
First she beat Maxine Thylin 2-0 and then in the final Tammy faced Talita Alencar, defeated with another 2-0 score.
The other champions in the black belt division were:
62kg: João Miyao choked João Pedro Somalia from the back for the title.
69kg: Paulo Miyao beat Samir Chantre 5-0 for the gold medal.
77kg: Celso Venícius secured the gold medal after Roberto Satoshi dislocated his shoulder early in the final.
85kg: Tanner Rice beat Lucas Barbosa 2-1 on advantages for the gold medal.
94kg: Erberth Santos beat Evandro Nunes 10-0 for the title.
+94kg: Ricardo Evangelista beat Roberto Cyborg 10-0 for the gold medal.
In the female division, results were:
55kg: Maxine Thylin beat Talita Alencar for the gold
62kg: Mackenzie Dern beat Marina Ribeiro 2-0.
70kg: Jessica Oliveira beat Tammy Griego for the gold medal.
The final team podium was:
- Alliance Los Angeles – 515pts
- Checkmat – 425pts
- UAEJJ National Team – 280pts
