Gilbert Burns Continues Teaching Jiu-Jitsu With Brain Surgery Survivor

UFC contender Gilbert Burns might be one of the most formidable opponents you could face in the octagon, but outside of that, he’s got a heart of gold.

In late April, Burns took some time to train jiu-jitsu with a brain surgery survivor who is using the sport to rehabilitate after surgery. Matt, who goes by the instagram handle @brainsurgerysurvivor, was diagnosed with hydrocephalus in April of 2021 and has taken to social media to document his recovery process. Over the course of the past year, he’s posted many videos of physical therapy, which often includes weight lifting, walking, boxing, and playing games. It might come as no surprise to readers of Jiu-Jitsu Times that he’s now taking up BJJ as another form of rehab.

Matt’s first day of training with Burns took place at Sanford MMA, and they covered some foundational submissions like a triangle, armbar, and rear-naked choke.

Now, Burns is showing off some of Matt’s early progress with a takedown, armbar, and guard passing.

We commend Matt on his progress and wish him a speedy recovery. Jiu-Jitsu Times will stay up to date with his journey in the activity.
