Gilbert Burns Awards BJJ Black Belt to Undefeated Bellator Heavyweight Steve Mowry

Steve Mowry is a problem for the heavyweight division. At a tower 6’8″, Mowry sports a perfect 10-0 professional MMA record, which is supported by his 6-0 amateur record. On Wednesday, Mowry announced that he had leveled-up in jiu-jitsu, and had been awarded his black belt by Gilbert Burns.

I started my BJJ journey 12 years ago. To reach black belt under the Burns brothers is just as crazy to say then as it it now but I’m feeling so blessed to have made it. Now the real work begins.

Mowry is coming off a win at Bellator 271, when he defeated veteran heavyweight Rakim Cleveland by first-round submission. Of Mowry’s 10 career professional wins, six have come by way of submission, which is an extremely high submission rate for a heavyweight. He is currently the no. 6-ranked Bellator heavyweight, and is likely no more than two wins away from a title shot.

Mowry trains in Deerfield Beach, FL at Sanford MMA alongside his jiu-jitsu coach and former UFC title challenger Gilbert Burns. Burns is an accomplished jiu-jitsu competitor in his own right; he is an IBJJF gi and no-gi black belt world champion, and recently defeated Rafael Lovato Jr. at a Who’s Number One event.

Grappling Insider would like to congratulate Steve Mowry on this major accomplishment!
