UFC strawweight veteran Angela Magana is in a coma following complications from emergency surgery.
According to MMA Junkie, Magana first went in for treatment for a nerve block after suffering pain from a herniated disc. However, she didn’t respond well to the nerve block and was diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome, which led to the need for emergency surgery to remove the compression on her spinal nerve roots.
Hours later, Magana’s team released a statement on her social media saying that the doctors were having trouble waking her up.
Magana’s team provided another update after overnight attempts to awaken her were unsuccessful.
In a text message to MMA Junkie, Magana’s coach said that the fighter’s conditioned has improved, and that she’s moving her fingers and toes and blinking. He released a video shortly thereafter.
Magana is 11-10 in MMA. She went 0-3 during her time in the UFC, which ended in 2017.
