On Saturday, February 27, Fight to Win held its second all-female fight night live from Dallas. In the main event of Fight to Win 165, 20-year old phenom Elisabeth Clay won her black belt debut in the gi, submitting Maria Malyjasiak via toehold. With the win, Clay captured the Fight to Win welterweight gi title.
Clay is just a few months removed from earning her black belt from Osvaldo Moizinho and Samir Chantre in November 2020. Despite her inexperience as a black belt competitor, Clay was a favorite over the champion Malyjasiak, who is an IBJJF gi and no-gi Pans champion.
Although Malyjasiak initiated an initial leg entanglement, it was Clay’s leg game that earned her the win. After briefly attacking from the 50-50 position, Clay went belly-down on a toehold to secure the submission win in her black belt gi debut.
In the night’s co-main event, multiple-time gi and no-gi world champion Luiza Monteiro secured a beautiful toehold submission on Jessica Flowers. Monteiro controlled much of the match with a pair of sweeps before establishing a leg entaglement. The moment Flowers’ presented the opportunity, Monteiro grabbed a toehold and a quick tap.
