The 2018 European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship is in the books. The black-belts were set loose at the Odivelas Multiusos Pavilion this Sunday and did not disappoint.
Women
In the absolute division, Tayane Porfírio (Alliance) had a gripping match with Bia Mesquita (Gracie Humaitá). Having beat Erin Herle (Alliance) in the lightweight final via choke from the back, Bia was again faced with the mission of trying to contain Tayane, who had defeated Venla Luukkonen (Hilti BJJ) at super-heavyweight.
It was a close fight. Bia was leading by five advantages up until the final minutes. After consecutive penalties — the last one for escaping, — Tayane was given the two points that meant she had again secured double gold in Portugal.
Men
Lucas Hulk took absolute gold. With great campaigns on Saturday, he and Keenan Cornelius made it to the final. Having opted to sit out his weight division, Hulk came back today and was declared the champion as he and his teammate closed it out for Atos. Fair enough, as Keenan bagged his own gold medal as he submitted Helton Junior (Cícero Costha) from the back in the heavyweight final.
Gracie Barra Amora teacher Nelton Pontes etched his name in BJJ history by winning his first European title, which also happens to be Portugal’s own first gold medal since the inception of the Euros. He outscored Arya Esfandmaz (Roger Gracie Academy) 18-0 in the super-heavyweight final.
Teams
Cícero Costha’s men scored a total of 84 points, putting the team ahead of Alliance (64) and Atos (56). Alliance’s women scored 51 points, ending up with a healthy lead over Gracie Barra (31) and GFTeam (25).
