Men’s absolute podium with Erberth Santos, Otávio Nalati, Admilson Gobi and João Soares. IBJJF
Not even the cold — for Brazil, anyway — winter in the state of Espírito Santo could stop many of the country’s great competitors from showing up for the Vitória Open, held on Aug. 4 and 5.
The Tancredo Neves sports center served as the stage for fights across all belts in classical and no-gi BJJ, but it was with the performances of strong black-belts from the international circuit that the crowd went wild.
Erberth Santos (Esquadrão) and Bia Basílio (Atos) got silver in their weight divisions, but then came back to claim the absolute crowns.
After arriving in the super-heavy final and letting Vitor Toledo take the gold, Erberth faced Otávio Nalati, the weekend’s ultra-heavy champion, and finished him on the arm. Erberth later talked to Graciemag and shared his impressions of the tournament. “This time away teaching classes opened my mind to compete. I lost 14kg in the meantime, and I’m still deciding whether I’m dropping to heavyweight in my next competitions. I opened the path to Toledo in the super-heavy due to the help he gave me in my quest for rankings points last year, but in our next final we’ll have a war. Against Nalati in the absolute, I want to stress my admiration for him. I studied his game and I knew what I was gonna do. For the submission, I used an adapted armbar with a wristlock.”
On the no-gi side of things, Fábio Caloi and Renato Cardoso closed out the absolute podium for Alliance. Read on for more results.
