Eddie Bravo Looking To Implement Up Kicks In Combat Jiu-Jitsu

Recently, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu founder Eddie Bravo introduced the BJJ world to Combat Jiu-Jitsu (CJJ). This new type of jiu-jitsu allowed competitors to smack their downed opponents in order to, as Bravo put it, “keep jiu-jitsu honest.”

For the most part, CJJ has been a success. Big name jiujiteiros such as red belt Rorion Gracie have hailed Combat Jiu Jitsu for being “real jiu-jitsu.”

Eddie, however, thinks CJJ still needs some work. Bravo said in a 10th Planet forum that he wants to add upkicks (i.e., when grounded fighters kick up at their standing opponents) to CJJ so that fighters don’t feel too comfortable standing over an opponent who is in open guard.

I’m working on getting upkicks allowed, gonna run it by the commission. Some competitors were feeling too comfortable standing over their opponent who was in open guard. Allowing upkicks will force the guy standing to get down and pass the guard. Again, cjj is all about Jiu Jitsu. The strikes weren’t added for tkos, they were added to open up submissions

What do you think? Is it time to introduce kicks into Brazilian jiu-jitsu? Sound off below or in this article’s Facebook thread!
