It looks like UFC welterweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone may have a fight at UFC 205.
Recently, MMA Junkie reported that a UFC official confirmed there were verbal agreements in place for Cowboy and TUF 17 winner, Kelvin Gastelum to face off at UFC 205. There is no agreement on paper yet, and nothing is official.
The 24-year-old Gastelum is coming off of a unanimous decision win over former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks. Kelvin holds a purple belt at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu and in his three-year UFC career, he has won both Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night honors.
Gastelum has only been defeated twice and has never been stopped in a professional fight. Eight of his twelve wins have come by way of stoppage.
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is not only riding a three-fight win streak in the welterweight division, but all three of those fights were Performance of the Night-worthy finishes. He is a former lightweight championship contender and was recently awarded his BJJ black belt from Eliot Marshall at Easton Training Center.
Cowboy was originally slated to face former Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 205, but Lawler pulled out of the bout. Cerrone stated that a piece of him died when the former champion said he couldn’t fight.
UFC 205 will kick off live from the world-famous Madison Square Garden on November 12. The event will mark the UFC’s debut in New York, which recently lifted a ban on mixed martial arts.
