Anyone who’s seen Derrick Lewis fight will likely agree with his recent declaration that he’s “one of the baddest blue belts in Texas.” And now, he’s one step closer to being one of the baddest purple belts in Texas.
Following his defeat of Aleksei Oleinik earlier this month, Lewis was given the first stripe on his BJJ blue belt by Renzo Gracie Houston coach Joe Murphy. Murphy says he’s worked with Lewis for his last two fights and expressed his high hopes for the fighter in an Instagram post that Lewis later shared.
Professional fighters know as well as anyone how much these little stripes can mean. Maybe one day we’ll see Lewis competing in some big-name grappling tournaments as well.
