Dana White confirms Cigano to fight at New Year’s UFC

Not having fought since May 26, when he knocked out Frank Mir in defending his heavyweight belt, Junior Cigano dos Santos is now scheduled to return to the octagon this December 29, for the traditional UFC New Year’s Eve event.

Dana White, the promotion’s president, confirmed the news this weekend.

The name of the challenger is still under wraps. Initially set to fight for the belt, Alistair Overeem is currently under suspension for doping, and will remain so until December 27. Though the date is two days before the date, Dana White isn’t confident in the Dutchman’s release to fight.

Hence the likelihood that Cain Velasquez, who lost the title to Cigano by knockout in November 2011, will be the next challenger.
