Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm may have yet another chance to make history. Not only does Holm hold the distinction of being the woman to put an end to Ronda Rousey’s dominance over the UFC women’s bantamweight division, but she may have yet another chance to be the first woman in history to hold a title in two different UFC divisions.
Reigning UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris “Cyborg” reported on social media that she is interested in a fight with Holm. Cyborg says she wants the fight at UFC 219.
To wit:
Before Holly signed with the UFC her management teased of an independent PPV one day between #TeamCyborg and #TeamHolm. When we both signed to the @UFC I tried to negotiate a fight as the Co-Main against Holly Holm the night Ronda fought Cat Zingano in LA. Holly fought Raquel Pennington instead, while I fought for @invictafc the night before. At #ufc198 I requested Holly, and then again when I was the main event on @fs1 for #ufcfn95. Holly won easily in Singapore, and Megan Anderson was forced to withdrawal my team again requested Holm for #ufc214. #CyborgNation has been very loud online since #ufc214 and wants #CyborgVHolm I want my next fight to be the biggest fight I can make for the fans who have supported me my entire career. #ufc219 I want to face Holly Holm in Vegas. Let the @UFC know this is a PPV you will buy!
Holm fought for the inaugural UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship against Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208. She lost via unanimous decision.
Her loss did not come without its controversy, though, especially considering Germaine repeatedly hit Holm after the bell had called an end to the round.
De Ranadamie was later stripped of the title, and Cyborg faced Tonya Evinger for the vacant crown at UFC 214. Though Evinger put up a solid effort, Cyborg dominated the fight and finished Tonya in the third round.
Cris Cyborg is currently riding a 17-fight no-loss streak, and there is good reason to believe she is the best pound-for-pound female mixed martial artist in the world.
But Holly Holm has ended the streak of one woman who could have claimed that title.
Can she do it to another?
