Polaris Professional Jiu-Jitsu has announced a bout between Garry Tonon and Rousimar for its Polaris 3 card on April 2nd in Poole, England. Terms and rules for the bout were not announced. Both competitors are known for their dangerous leg lock submssion games. Tonon, who earned his Black Belt in 2013 from Tom DeBlass, is a 3-time EBI Champion, 2015 NoGi Pans Champion and has competed in 2 ADCC events. He trains under the tutelage of several instructors from the Renzo Gracie lineage including Tom DeBlass, Ricardo Almeida, Dante Rivera, and John Danaher and is the owner and head coach at Brunswick Jiu-Jitsu in South Brunswick, NJ.
Palhares is a 2011 ADCC Silver medalist and owns a professional MMA record of 18-6 with 15 wins by way of submission. He is a long-time student of former UFC Middleweight Champion Murilo Bustamante at Brazilian Top Team and currently trains under Team Nogueira. He was stripped of the WSOF Welterweight title this past August after a controversial submission victory over Jake Shields where he continually gouged Shields in the eyes and held his Kimura submission after Shields had already tapped. This was not the first time Palhares has been the center of controversy. Palhares was released from the UFC in October 2013, after holding on to a heel hook submission after Mike Pierce after Pierce had already tapped. Pierce was out of the UFC for nearly two years after the fight.
Polaris also announced several other matches for the event.
Ben Askren vs. AJ Agazarm
Gianni Grippo vs. Bruno Frazatto
Joao Miyao vs. Yuhinori Sasa
The event will be available on pay-per-view and tickets for the event can be purchased by clicking here.
Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon x Rousimar Palhares is going down at Polaris Pro 3, which will be held April 2 in the UK.
Garry Tonon is on a quest to prove himself the best grappler on the planet. Although he has phenomenal all-around jiu jitsu, he’s particularly adept in the leglock game. Until recently only a select few really understood the leglock game, let alone could apply it well in competition. Marcin Held had a number of submission wins by leglock in high level MMA, and Garry took him on at Polaris 1. The legendary Japanese leglock master Masakazu Imanari, too, fell to the technicality of Tonon at Polaris 2.
Now Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares, the man who leglocked his way to notoriety in the 2011 ADCC and more recently in the UFC and WSOF, is here to stop Tonon in his tracks.
