Conor McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, is confident that “The Notorious” Irishman will face Lightweight title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov this year, and he thinks the fight will end in Conor’s favor — within two rounds!
“I think within two rounds Conor would knock him out,” Kavanagh said in a Facebook Live interview. “I think it would be maybe like the Eddie Alvarez fight, and he would stop him in the second.”
Those are some pretty strong words from Kavanagh, considering Khabib has won all of his 25 MMA fights and has finished 16 of them. This gives him one of the longest win streaks in MMA history. In fact, he has more wins than Conor has fights.
But as much as people love to hate on the trash-talking Dubliner, he can put his money (and that’s a lot of money!) where his mouth is. Jose Aldo rode an 18-fight win streak and he was defeated by Conor in 13 seconds. Eddie Alvarez held the Lightweight Championship in the UFC and Bellator — the world’s two biggest MMA promotions — and Conor made their fight look like an effortless win.
So, if there is one person in mixed martial arts who can derail the powerful locomotive that is Khabib Nurmagomedov, it’s Conor McGregor.
Of course, McGregor will have to get in line, though, because right now, Khabib is slated to face reigning Interim Lightweight Champion Tony “El Cucoy” Ferguson at UFC 223 on April 7. We’re still not sure if the fight will be for the interim title or the undisputed title, but as of now, it’s definitely going down.
Furthermore, UFC President Dana White has his doubts about Conor coming back to the UFC. In an interview with Toucher and Rich, White said he wouldn’t blame Conor for retiring from mixed martial arts considering McGregor is currently worth over $100 million. This makes him one of the richest men in Ireland.
Still, Kavanagh has faith that Conor McGregor will be back in the cage this year:
I can’t see it not happening this year. And when it does, and all the details are finalized, between the build up and the press conferences and everything, it’s going to be a typical Conor McGregor fight in that it stops the world. It will be incredible, and I really hope it happens. I’m really looking forward to it.
