California Has Banned Combat Sports Events Until The End Of May

With COVID-19 showing no sign of slowing down in the US, California’s Department of Consumer Affairs has extended the state’s ban on combat sports events through until the end of May, ESPN reports.

The Department, which includes the California State Athletic Commission, was the first of all the major states to issue a temporary ban on combat sports — the suspension was first announced on March 12 and has initially been intended to last until the end of March.

The decision affects a number of MMA promotions that had events scheduled in CA for the month, most notably including UFC San Diego on May 16. Bellator also had two events scheduled for the month (May 9 in San Jose and May 29 in Temecula), but the promotion had already postponed them prior to the state’s announcement.
