Late Thursday evening, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida announced that he’s out of his scheduled match against former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum at BJJ Bet due to a knee injury sustained while training. The grappling legend broke the news via Instagram video, explaining that while the injury was not serious it would keep him from competing at 100 percent.
Quick to respond in the comments was Werdum himself, seeming to offer understanding and well wishes for his fellow black belt.
Hot off the heels of his highly publicized transition to MMA, this match happening at all took many buy surprise. No current word on a potential replacement to face Werdum in September.
The Jiu-Jitsu Times will continue to follow this story as it develops.
