Sunday was the day for the absolute blue and purple belts and the heavier divisions at the Tijuca Tennis Club, where the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu championship was held.

In the purple belt open weight class, Rodrigo da Conceição (Alliance) took top honors. After losing in the lightweight final, Rodrigo got back to his feet and captured gold against the big guys. Second place was left to Gabriel Lyrio Lucas (Check Mat), who also won the ultra heavyweight division, followed by medium heavyweight champion João Gabriel Rocha (Soul Fighters) and Rafael Naves (Nucleo), third at middleweight. Sunday’s other standout was heavyweight winner Kaue Damasceno (Nova União).

The best blue belt in the absolute division was an import. Lloyd Irvin representative Wilber Leonard took home with him to the States two gold medals, as he also secured first place in the ultra heavyweight division.
