The 2019 Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championship is in the books. The first big CBJJ event to pay out cash prizes, the Nationals, held in Barueri, welcomed over 7,000 fighters, making it the biggest competition ever held by the federation.
This Sunday, the adult black-belts stepped on the mats to see who deserved to be champion. Nicholas Meregali and Bia Mesquita walked away with double gold and some extra money in their pockets. To Nicholas, the victorious evening started with him coming from behind to beat Fellipe Andrew and finish with the lapel in the super-heavyweight final. Later, in the absolute, Nicholas fought in the final against Rudson Mateus, the medium heavy champion, in a duel that started well for Rudson but was flipped by Nicholas, and after a sequence of penalties (crossing and lack of combativeness), Rudson wound up disqualified.
Bia Mesquita first won the middleweight title by defeating Renata Marinho. Then, in the open division, she met Sabatha Lais, who had eliminated strong contestants on her way to the final. Bia made full use of her strong game as she pulled, swept, transitioned to the back and choked with a bow-and-arrow. Double gold for the Gracie Humaitá star.
Also noteworthy: Carina Santi, of G13 BJJ, took the women’s super-heavy gold, and siblings Cleber Clandestino and Bia Basílio, representing Almeida JJ, beat the roosterweight and lightweight divisions, respectively.
