His name is Roberto Aguilar, and his achievement is extraordinary.
He started training at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after watching his grandson training for more than a year. He was intrigued to the point that he informed the lead instructor’s wife that he was interested in trying the sport out as well.
BJJ can be mentally and physically challenging to the youngest of spring chickens, but to someone in the upper regions of age it can be a bit more of a trifling experience. The number one thing that Roberto points out for his success is to make sure that any training partners he rolls with understand how to roll with someone his age.
“I was in good shape and had proper nutrition prior to Jiu-Jitsu, but I have really worked on my conditioning, cardio, and endurance. Yoga, meditation, the ocean, stretching, amino acids, and BCAAs aid the recovery of the mental and physical,” he says.
The road to blue belt wasn’t easy, but now that Aguilar has it, he has a greater appreciation for the journey he has been on thus far.
“The blue belt demonstrated that I did the work that was necessary, and it was very satisfying on a personal level. Especially that I am 70 years old and overcame my fears and doubts,” he says.
He also stated:
“Age is a frame of mind. With Jiu-Jitsu, you don’t know unless you try it and can’t try it unless you want to. To be successful in anything you have to be willing to sweat and push yourself to your limits if need be.”
So many people complain that they are too old to get started in BJJ. Age is a frame of mind. Stop saying that you are too old and simply admit that you have given up on yourself. It is not good to lie to others and perhaps even worse to lie to yourself. You CAN do it!
