BJJ Fanatics are stepping further and further into the world of fight promotion after a superb BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix last year, they’re now setting up a Gordon Ryan v Pat Downey superfight. Downey has been getting slowly more involved with the professional grappling scene as the American standout welcomed ADCC Silver Medalist Nick Rodriguez back to wrestling in a triumphant 12-0 Technical Fall win last year. The competition between Rodriguez and Downey is far from over as the pair have been signed to compete under Third Coast Grappling’s trademark Hybrid ruleset in March at 3CG4. This is the same ruleset that saw Gordon Ryan secure a submission win over 6 x NCAA Champion, Bo Nickal at 3CG3 last year.
Pat Downey appears to be willing to take it a step further than either him or Nickal have before as he’s now agreed to take on Gordon Ryan in not one, but two matches on the same night. The pair will be competing under each other’s specialised rulesets with one match being under No Time Limit Submission Only rules while the second will be under traditional Wrestling rules. Logic would say that the night should end with the men going 1-1 and taking the win in their respective fields but Ryan has already confirmed that he fully intends to win both matches and win the series 2-0.
The matches are set to take place on February 29th at the next BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix that will see the promotion’s first 170 lbs tournament. The tournament is already set to feature some of the best talent around with the competitors being Ethan Crelinsten, Johnny Tama, Oliver Taza, Kody Steele, Matheus Gonzaga, John Combs, PJ Barch and Jonnatas Gracie. The Gordon Ryan and Pat Downey match will serve as the main event of the card.
