While many of us remember BJ Penn as being the the man who won both the UFC Lightweight and Welterweight titles, he has had a pretty rough go of it lately. First he lost a Unanimous Decision to Clay Guida at UFC 237 that took him to a UFC record of 7 fights without a win, spanning a period of over nine years. He then ended up caught on camera getting involved in a bar brawl only a few months after he returned to Hawai’i. This was quickly followed by a second video surfacing showing BJ Penn in another bar brawl in his native Hawai’i. The videos themselves have gotten so widely seen that even fellow former UFC Champion Frankie Edgar recently discussed them on The Joe Rogan Experience.
Now, as per a report by Big Island Now, BJ Penn is being investigated by the Hawai’i Police Department for a possible DUI violation. The incident was a single-car crash that happened on Friday, 7th February 2020 at approximately 7pm while Penn was operating a black Toyota Tacoma. He was the only occupant of the car when it crashed and was transported immediately to Hilo Medical Center, although there is currently no information regarding any potential injuries.
The Police confirmed that there was a call made reporting that the truck was speeding initially and then lost control as it flipped into the area in front of Prince Kuhio Plaza. Originally, Penn wasn’t being investigated for a DUI as a recent change in protocol meant that the Police were unable to administer a blood alcohol content test due to him requiring medical attention. However, the Police were able to get a test done in the end and although they were unable to confirm the results, they did confirm that the results were what led to BJ Penn being investigated for the DUI in the first place.
