EBI 16 lived up to the hype, with some of the world’s best female bantamweight competitors showing up to earn a highly coveted grappling title. And when it was all over, World and ADCC champion Beatriz Mesquita had added another impressive championship to her resume, while 10th Planet superstar Richie Martinez remained at the top of the Combat Jiu-Jitsu food chain.
Mesquita was a favorite to win the event, and she submitted all her opponents in regulation leading up to the final with UAEJJF World Pro champion Bianca Basilio. The match was a tough one that forced the women into overtime for the first time that night. Mesquita chose to take the offensive position and armbarred Basilio in just four seconds. Basilio was unable to armbar Mesquita in the same amount of time, and thus, Mesquita earned her first EBI belt.
Reigning welterweight Combat Jiu-Jitsu champion Richie Martinez of 10th Planet took on Bobby Emmons in a rematch of their match at EBI 13 last year. Emmons initially gave Martinez a bit of a challenge, but the “Boogeyman” didn’t take too long to catch Emmons in one of his signature d’arce chokes. A quick tap cemented Martinez’s place as the CJJ welterweight champion once again.
