Newly minted Bellator fighter AJ Agazarm and longtime jiu-jitsu veteran has zero words to mince in his ongoing slab of carpaccio with notorious grappling personality Dillon Danis.
Appearing on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Agazarm talked about the evolution of competitive BJJ and his transition into MMA, with a detour to go into the subject of “Conor McGregor entourage member” Danis.
“What’s your beef with Dillon?” Helwani asked.
“You think that I spent thousands of dollars and flew all the way across the country to talk about Dillon Danis?” Agazarm responded. (Helwani retorted that AJ had actually brought Danis up first in text messages in the lead-up to the interview.)
“Look, Dillon Danis was plucked from obscurity with no real accomplishments in BJJ to be an entourage member for Conor McGregor,” said Agazarm. “He’s got a batting average of .500 at black belt, he’s got like 30 matches total. You know how many matches I have? 200. That’s a substantial amount…I destroyed him twice.”
He didn’t stop there.
“It’s disrespectful to consider yourself the ‘face of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’ when you’ve got guys at a much higher level with much better results.” Agazarm named Felipe Pena, Lucas Lepri, Buchecha, and Roger Gracie as the actual face of jiu-jitsu.
“Does [the jiu-jitsu community] laugh at him, or with him?” Helwani asked.
“There certainly are a lot of people who find it comical what he’s doing, but you know…look at his skill set. What has he accomplished? He destroyed Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu…is non-existent, and Dillon was brought on to help him in that match with [Nate Diaz]. Dillon had a lot of success in those early matches, and has really nice d’arce chokes and guillotines…but if you look, anyone who has any slight ground game has exposed Conor. Nate did it, Chad [Mendez] did it, and now Kabib. And lets be honest, that whole situation? Ariel, you could have submitted Conor.”
Danis has defeated Agazarm several times, including once at Submission Underground and again at IBJJF Atlanta Spring Open.
