Backs for BJJ Review

Brazilian jiu jitsu and submission grappling are among the most addictive sports in the world. When the grappling bug bites it can positively influence your life and make your world a better place, but it often comes at a price. Injuries are an unfortunate reality of combat sports and back injuries are among the most debilitating.

The good folks over at the Combat Sports Clinic have provided us with a copy of their latest DVD “Backs for BJJ” and we have put it to the test so you don’t have to.

There are a lot of good rehabilitation resources online for back injuries, but the Combat Sports Clinic addresses these injuries from a unique perspective. As a martial artist, Rosi is a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu and a MMA pioneer. Rosi was the first woman from the UK to enter the famed UFC Octagon and amassed an impressive record before her retirement.

In addition to her in-cage acumen, Rosi is also a life-long advocate of self improvement and education. Rosi earned a degree from Cambridge in mathematics and a PhD in Computing from the University of Manchester, but as her injuries through fighting began to accumulate, she began to look for answers.

Instead of going under the knife, Rosi sought the knowledge on how to avoid surgery if at all necessary and this led her to osteopathy, where she earned a degree and later opened a practice.

Backs for BJJ is the culmination of Rosi’s work with professional martial artists. Over the years Rosi has worked tirelessly keeping fighters and grapplers on the mats and in this DVD you can see why she has been successful.

This DVD systematically tackles various back issues with an array of rehabilitation exercises. One thing that really stood out to me is that while it had sections to help with acute post-injury recovery, it also tackled sport specific exercises that help preventing injuries.

One of my favorite things about this DVD series is that Rosi tackles all the issues from an evidence-based approach. Rosi only chooses exercises and concepts that have been proven and by leaving the guess work behind, this DVD provides a concise and useful resource for anybody that’s struggling with a back injury.

Production wise this DVD is on a par with the like of BJJ fanatics. It was shot in full HD in 1080p and the sound is on point. If you’re suffering with back pain and want to get back on the mats then this is definitely worth a try.
