Ash Williams submits Jeremy Skinner in main event of Subversion Equinox

Ash Williams submitted Jeremy Skinner with a triangle choke in the main event of Subversion Equinox.

Over the weekend, top Welsh competitor and recent ADCC veteran Ash Williams picked up an impressive victory over fellow ADCC veteran Jeremy Skinner.

The two elite grapplers squared off in the main event of Subversion Equinox on Saturday, March 18, live from Sydney, Australia.

Skinner, a black belt under Lachlan Giles known for his dangerous guard and leg locks – came out looking to wrestle with Williams. But after a minute of hand-fighting on the feet, Williams scored a takedown of his own with a clean arm drag.

Now in bottom position, Skinner attacked from his half guard, quickly working his way into a leg entanglement. Williams, though, escaped the position and the pair returned briefly to the feet.

From there, Williams showed of his top-tier wrestling, shooting a single leg and immediately jumping onto the Australian’s back. Skinner defended the position by sliding Williams over the top, returning the match once again to the neutral standing position.

Skinner wasted no time in shooting a single leg of his own, but Williams countered with a kimura, only to let go of the kimura and jump directly into a triangle choke. Skinner defended for roughly 30 seconds but ultimately was forced to tap just under halfway into the 10-minute match.

For Williams, this was a strong showing after a disappointing first-round exit at the 2022 ADCC World Championships, where he lost on points to eventual champion Diogo Reis. The three-division Polaris champion is scheduled to defend his lightweight title this summer against current UFC featherweight contender Ryan Hall.

Although he’s surely disappointed in the loss, Skinner should feel little shame in losing to an opponent of Williams’ caliber. Like Williams, Skinner recently competed at his first-ever ADCC, defeating former ADCC silver medalist AJ Agazarm before losing to Gabriel Sousa in the quarterfinals.

Skinner is slated to compete next at Grapplefest 15, where he will take on three other ADCC veterans in a lightweight tournament.
