Adding to a stunning series of upsets at this year’s ADCC Championships, relative newcomer Amy Campo has unseated reigning queen Gabi Garcia in the semifinals of the women’s +60kg division.
After a wrestling exchange on the feet that lasted nearly a full ten minutes – with neither athlete scoring – in the final minutes of the match, Amy Campo scored a takedown on Garcia that catapulted both grapplers out of bounds, and on to the concrete beside the mats.
However, Campo – aware that the ref hadn’t called for a reset – continued to advance her position, scrambling around on the concrete into full mount on Garcia. She then attacked her patented armbar, looking for a finish before the ref finally redirected both athletes to the safety of the mats. Though she didn’t tap Garcia with the submission attempt, Campo won decisively with a score of 5-0.
Campo now advances to the finals of the ADCC women’s +60kg division, which after this weekend, will have a new reigning champion.
