Alistair Overeem’s face made headlines late last night following a shocking last minute loss to Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC’s Washington D.C. fight night. The imposing UFC veteran dominated his five rounds against Rozenstruik in what appeared to be a certain victory, only to get blasted in the face seconds before the final bell. Knocked to the ground by a wild overhand punch, Overeem remained full conscious and popped back to his feet, but the ref called the match anyway.
Which is when fans, and subsequently everyone else, got a look at the result of that punch, which split Overeem’s face so badly it looked like rare steak cut with safety scissors.
As the fourteenth KO in the 39-year-old fighter’s career, the loss is not insignificant. There are limits to how much damage even specimens like Overeem can take cumulatively. Alistair is keeping a positive attitude, however, taking to Twitter to confirm he’s been stitched up:
And yes, he got a plastic surgeon to the the work. Cuz damn.
The loss brings Overeem’s record to 45-18, with one NC.
