ADCC Day 1 results and video highlights: Gordon Ryan advances

The first day of the 2022 ADCC World Championships took place on Saturday, September 17, live from Las Vegas, NV.

The day had a number of upsets, as returning champions Matheus Diniz and JT Torres both fell in the quarterfinals, while favorites Gordon Ryan, Felipe Pena, and Kaynan Duarte all advanced.

Below are highlights and notable results from day one of the 2022 ADCC World Championships.

In what was one of the biggest upsets of the day, ADCC rookie Haisam Rida needed less than 90 seconds to submit 2013 ADCC absolute champion and #5-seed Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu in the first round. Rida would lose by points in the quarterfinals against Brazilian Trials winner Roosevelt Sousa.

Otherwise, Gordon Ryan lived up to expectations with a quick submission of Heikki Jussila in the first round, followed by a hard-earned points victory over Victor Hugo in the quarterfinals. He’ll meet Roosevelt Sousa in the semifinals tomorrow, while Felipe Pena and Nick Rodriguez will meet on the other side of the bracket.

Nicholas Meregali proved he deserved the invite with two impressive wins to bring him to the semifinals where he will square off with Craig Jones. For his part, Jones scored a pair of submissions to set up the showdown with Meregali.

Meanwhile, returning heavyweight champion Kaynan Duarte looked sharp; he’ll face Rafael Lovato Jr. in the semifinals.

In the round of 16, late replacement Mateusz Szczecinski upset West Coast Trials winner William Tackett in a leg lock shootout, and Josh Hinger defeated Atos teammate Tye Ruotolo by points in an action-packed match that went to overtime.

The upsets continued in the quarterfinals, when European Trials winner Eoghan O’Flanagan upset Mason Fowler to earn his place in the semifinals where he’ll square off with New Wave’s Giancarlo Bodoni. Bodoni scored his own upset over returning champion Matheus Diniz.

On the other side of the bracket, Vagner Rocha and Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa will meet in a match that is likely to be decided by wrestling.

The consensus most exciting division didn’t disappoint, delivering many of the day’s best matches, including a first-round war that saw Renato Canuto beating Nicky Ryan by points.

Kade Ruotolo shined with a beautiful armbar over Lachlan Giles followed by a quick submission win over Roberto Jimenez.

Ruotolo will face 10th Planet’s PJ Barch, who shocked fans with an upset points victory over returning two-time champion JT Torres.

The other semifinal will feature teenage phenom Mica Galvao — considered by many to be a favorite — against Dante Leon. Galvao recently earned a decision win over Leon in a submission-only Who’s Number One match.

Underdog Trials winner Sam McNally shocked the crowd with a points victory over fan-favorite Garry Tonon in one of the day’s most entertaining contests, while Fabricio Andrey bested youngster Cole Abate by decision in an ultra-competitive affair.

McNally would lose in the quarterfinals to Ares BJJ’s Josh Cisneros. Cisneros will take on Brazilian Diogo Reis in the first semifinal.

The division’s other semifinal will feature Diego “Pato” Oliveira against Gabriel Sousa. Oliveira looked exceptionally sharp on the day with submissions on Keith Krikorian and returning silver medalist Kennedy Maciel.

Women’s 60 kg.

Favorites Bianca Basilio, Brianna Ste-Marie, Ffion Davies, and Bia Mesquita advanced to the semifinals, all putting in strong performances.

Women’s 60+ kg.

Similarly, the women’s heavyweight division saw favorites Gabi Garcia, Rafaela Guedes, and Kendall Reusing winning, while West Coast Trials winner Amy Campo picked up an impressive victory over Elisabeth Clay. Guedes and Reusing have previously met at Who’s Number One, with Guedes walking away with the submission win.
