Felipe Pena wins Abu Dhabi World Pro Absolute preliminary rounds, putting him into the finals on Saturday against Jose Junior. The preliminaries were loaded with surprises as favorites were defeated, two expected final competitors were disqualified, and underdogs won and moved forward.
Pena won his place in the finals by defeating Marcio Andre, Claudio Calasans, Dany Gerard and Alexander Trans. The black belt Brazilian, Jose Junior, won his trip to the finals by defeating Hassem Moussa, Jackson Sousa, Luiz Panza and Ricardo Evangelista.
Two favorites, Victor Honorio and Erberth Santos were disqualified in the semi-finals after they received several warnings about inactivity. This automatically moved Pena and Junior into the finals.
Major competitors who were expected to be in the finals included Keenan Cornelius, Andre Glavao, Leandro Lo, Claudio Calasans and Roberto Cyborg. Cornelius lost due a referee decision. Glavao lost through advantage to Santos as did lo to Honorio. Calasans lost 4 to 2 to Pena and Cyborg lost to Trans through points.
Grapping, a term used to describe many types of martial arts, in this case jui-jitsu, requires the opponents to use techniques, counters and maneuvers to get a physical advantage, such as escaping, improving relative position, or injuring their opponent. Felipe Pena, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, is known for his technical ability and well-rounded game. As such he is one of the most talented and toughest competitor in the game. His past includes an ADCC silver medallist, and being a Copa Podio and IBJJF champion.
Finals will be held Saturday at the IPIC Arena Abu Dhabi, UA.
