Absolute title decided by stalling at Brasilia Open
The DQ that defined a champion at the Brasília Open. Black Bull Squad/IBJJF
The Brasília Open was held this weekend in the Brazilian capital. Athletes of all ranks fought in the hopes of achieving international gold.
Cláudia do Val of De la Riva, concluding a brilliant season, again walked out with double gold in the end.
The only female black-belt signed up for the heavyweight division, she won her first match in the absolute and moved on to the final opposite Bia Basílio of Almeida Jiu-Jitsu. Unexpectedly, Basílio then wound up disqualified after accumulating four penalties.
Rodrigo Totti, head of refereeing at the event, explained it: “Cláudia and Bia got three straight penalties for pulling guard together. After 20 seconds without defining who would pass, the ref told them both to get up with a penalty each. In the first three penalties, it was for the same infraction. Throughout the fight, however, the ref interpreted that Bia Basílio acted with a lack of combativeness, and with a fourth penalty, the DQ of same athlete was declared.”
Men
Cássio Francis (Gracie Barra) took gold in the open class. After securing silver at super-heavyweight, he came back even stronger and managed to climb to the top of the podium.
Teams
Gracie Barra came out on top with 374 points, followed by Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu and its 333. GFTeam took third with 214.
