3rd Coast Grappling Prepares Us For A New Action-Heavy Rule Set

The inaugural 3rd Coast Grappling tournament is almost here, and in preparation for Saturday’s event, promoter Ryan McGuire has released a video to explain the new rule set.

Rules? What rules? Check out our unique ruleset explained by World Champion Brandon "Wolverine" Mullins and Prof. Alan Villacorta, our commentary team for Jan 12th at Scout Bar. #bjj #superfights #subonly #grappling #jiujitsuforeveryone #jiujitsu #fight #rules #houston #forthecity

The gist of it is this: The first person to either land a submission or reach eleven points is the winner. In the event that neither happens in regulation, the match will move to sudden-death overtime. The winner of a coin toss says whether they want top or bottom position, and the match continues from there. The rule set strives to reduce stalling and encourages competitors to engage in a fast-paced grappling match.

Combined with the go-getter nature of many of the competitors on the card, these rules could make for some serious action. “Tex” Johnson will be defending his belt in no-gi at Fight 2 Win in Sacramento the night before, then making his way to Houston the very next day to meet Keenan Cornelius in the gi at 3rd Coast for the main event of the evening.

Roberto Jimenez and Diego Almeida will also likely have an entertaining match, having previously grappled in an explosive Fight 2 Win match in early 2017 that F2W called “probably the best no-gi match in F2W history” at the time. Given how explosive their previous meeting was, there’s no telling what will happen this time around.

The first 3rd Coast Grappling event will take place on Saturday, January 12 at Scout Bar in Houston, TX. Those who can’t be there in person can watch the event happen live on FloGrappling.
