The latest BJJ event to fall victim to the pandemic is also one of the biggest.
The IBJJF has cancelled the 2020 Gi and NoGi Worlds due to COVID. The announcement came via the organization’s Instagram page and cited international travel restrictions and guidelines as a chief concern.
“The IBJJF regrets to inform that unfortunately, there will not be a 2020 World Adult Championship Gi & 2020 World No-Gi Championship. Due to the extreme difficulties of travel challenges, including forbidden entry into the United States faced by the organization and athletes, these events can not come to fruition.
The IBJJF will continue to work diligently to bring the competition calendar back to normal as much as possible next year and will post updates on future events accordingly.
We thank you all for the continued incredible support. ”
With fellow major promotion ADCC suffering delays along with reports of a second spike, the announcement comes as little surprise to some. Though the IBJJF was able to run Pans this year with few issues, the higher influx of international competitors for the worlds might not have been able to withstand stricter guidelines.
The JJT will continue to follow this story as it develops.
