After winning bronze, Elisabeth Clay (in black) came back to win gold in the absolute. IBJJF
This Thursday marked the start of the most highly anticipated event of the BJJ season. The IBJJF World Championship, which this year returned to the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, on its first day featured the most competitive blue-belts on the planet.
Elisabeth Clay, an Alaska native, caught the crowd’s eye. Not long ago, at just 16 years of age, she qualified for ADCC 2017 by defeating big names in the American trials. A blue-belt from Ares Jiu-Jitsu, yesterday Clay finished third in the medium heavyweight division. Then she returned to beat four opponents and claim the top of the absolute podium. Besides the gold medal, she will return home with a brand-new purple belt.
The men’s section was dominated by Mateus Souza. The Atos Jiu-Jitsu member bagged gold at medium heavyweight as he beat Caio Almeida (Ribeiro JJ). Not satisfied, he signed up for the open division. After fighting twice, Mateus met in the final his teammate Tainan Dalpra, the middleweight champion, and they closed it out for Atos — and were simultaneously promoted purple-belts.
