The third day of the 2013 World Championship handled many divisions. For the lower belts, the brown belt male and female divisions settled their scores and the purple belt and brown belt open weight divisions ran for both male and female.
Brown belt Janni Larsson of Checkmat in Denmark, who we picked to do well this year, won double gold. She defeated two opponents with two submissions in the middleweight category then fought four fights in the open weight division with one submission to secure the two first place results. She said, “I finished one person with my first ever bicep slicer and I’ve never even done one of those in training!” The final of the open was against Rachel Demara and she defeated her by points.
Paulo Miyao was the big standout of the night with his final against Keenan Cornelius. After six times competing against the brown belt middle-heavy superstar, he finally won. You can read all about the light-featherweight’s final match by clicking here.
Purple belt Monique Elias of Alliance, wife of Mario Reis, was able to achieve double gold once again. Last year she won double gold as a blue belt but competed in the light division. This year she fought as a middleweight and won each of her three fights in a similar way and all under a minute. She recalls, “I jumped guard in all three matches and went to the triangle. One I finished with an omoplata from there, one I finished with an armbar and one I finished the triangle.” In the open she had four fights and won her final by points.
Heavyweight Fernando Andrade Reis was the winner of the purple belt open securing the double gold for him this year after he won his heavyweight division on Friday. The Alliance member came from Brazil and was able to finish his final with a choke from the mount becoming the youngest to win the open division.
