Thanks to the rise of MMA, the evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has never been more apparent. As the ultimate testing ground for all martial arts, the need for a no-gi system that was applicable to MMA became even more obvious, especially to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu founder Eddie Bravo. Unlike traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where the use of the gi for attacks is emphasized, 10th Planet focuses on clinching and overhooks, which, Eddie believed, was more suitable for MMA.

The dynamic, highly offensive 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu style of grappling has been adapted and utilized by some of the most exciting BJJ and MMA competitors to date, including EBI champion Garry Tonon, ONE Superstar Shinya Aoki, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee, as well as the Miyao brothers. There’s no doubt that adding 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu to our BJJ arsenal will certainly take our grappling skills to the next level.

Today, Evolve Daily shares The 4 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Moves Every Grappler Should Know:

1) The Rubber Guard

The moment anyone mentions 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, the first technique that comes to mind is probably the rubber guard. The rubber guard is a control that requires great flexibility. It is used to prevent one’s opponent from standing upright and passing the guard by using one’s leg and opposite side arm. Your leg must be across your opponent’s shoulder and neck while you hook his/her ankle using your wrist on your opposite side. To maintain control, you must constantly squeeze your knees together.

2) The Lockdown

A variation of the BJJ half guard, the lockdown is perhaps one of the most essential positions every 10th Planet grappler uses. Unlike the traditional full guard, this control allows a practitioner to be extremely offensive, giving him/her full access to a variety of sweeps and submissions. To use the lockdown, you must use your outside leg to hook your opponent’s leg then use your inside leg and cross it over your outside leg and hook your opponent’s leg, extending it. Doing this ensures that your opponent is always off balance so you can easily transition to your attack.

3) The Truck

The truck allows the practitioner to control his opponent and transition to back control. It is the entryway to many submissions including the infamous twister, which we will discuss later on. In traditional jiu-jitsu, the truck is also known as a rolling back attack. While your opponent is in the turtle position and you stabilize yourself to gain control, grab his shin on the opposite leg, fall on your shoulder and maintain back control while you have his other leg in lockdown.

4) Twister

Famously utilized by ONE Superstar Shinya Aoki and ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee, the twister is a variation of a wrestling technique similar to the wrestler’s guillotine, also used as a pin. The easiest way to do the twister is from back control. With one of your opponent’s legs in lockdown, grab ahold of one of your opponent’s arms and pull his head down. This creates the intense spine twisting motion that has made this submission so famous.

There’s no doubt that Eddie Bravo’s evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques has certainly created much excitement in the grappling community. By adding these techniques to your arsenal, you’ll surely be able to become a more well-rounded grappler. So tell us, which of these techniques will you try next?
